Freedom and Responsibility: What Independence Brought Me

I think independence means having freedom and responsibility. When I started to work after I graduated from my university, I became independent financially and emotionally.
The economic independence allowed me to have a lot of freedom. I could decide many things by myself such as where to live and what to buy. There were much more choices that I could have in my life than before. It was especially fun to make plans for my holidays. I went on a trip to many places in Japan and also foreign countries where I could not go when I was a student.
While I enjoyed my freedom, I also found that I had to be more responsible for my own life. When I was a student, I could depend on my parents, teachers, or other people if I need support. However, once I started to work, I had to take care of myself. There were so many things I had to do by myself. For example, I had to finish all my assigned work in time, pay bills and rent, and do all housework. Furthermore, because I was a teacher, I learned to be responsible to take care of other people such as my students and the people in the community.
Thus, independence brought me freedom and responsibility.

  1. I agree with you. Independence not only means do what we want to do, but also means that we have to have responsibility for many things. I like your essay`s structure. It flows really well. And examples in the article is convincing, since it provides me with the same feeling as a reader.

  2. Your version of independence is a good one. It got me thinking about the feelings I had when I first graduated and entered the workforce; everything was new and overwhelmed with responsibilities. I also believe that independence is a part of growing up.

  3. It is pleased to read your blog. Unlike the other students who are all talk about the political definitions and issues about this word. You define the word independence from your point of view which is very impressed. I agree with you, first financially independent and then be responsible for yourself.

  4. Thank you Hana for sharing your experience and vision. You are absolutely right when you say that financial independence gives you the feeling of Freedom but it brings much more responsibility.

  5. Umm, very interesting, because I just finished reading another person's response and he said independence was not freedom, which I agreed. Maybe independence could bring us freedom, but they are totally different!
I want to economically independent too! Maybe after this year I will go find some jobs to earn money, too!
Btw, it's also interesting to see Japanese on your homepage! I can understand a few, and I know your name Hana means ハナ, right?

  6. I really understand what you mean in this article. As I came to NYU after I gradeated from university in China immediately, I am still not economically independent from my family, which made me feel impressive and guilty sometimes.Although financial indepence doesn't mean everything, it trully gives us more freedom and options when we get along with others.

  7. Dear Hana,

This is good start to your discussion response. It seems that although independence has brought you both freedom and responsibility, perhaps a more accurate assessment would be that independence has brought you freedom, which in turn has brought you responsibility. Further, from what you say, it seems as though the responsibilities you have curtail your freedoms to some degree. However, your responsibilities might also make your more independent. Would you agree or disagree? I think concepts such as independence, responsibility, and freedom are all so complex and have such intertwined relationships with each other that it may be difficult to distinguish among the three or where one ends and another begins.

I'm looking forward to your future thoughts and opinions. Great first post.

    Sincerely,
    Mitali
